The City Schools of Decatur Board of Education believes that engaging the student body and seeking its input and feedback regarding the district's educational programs and activities is vital to achieving the district's vision and mission and carrying out its strategic plan. To this end, the Board of Education supports the participation of a Student Board of Education Representative selected by the district's high school students. The CSD Board of Education believes that a Student Board of Education Representative will:

• Amplify student voices
• Enhance communication between the Board and the students it serves
• Enhance collaboration between the Board and the students it serves
• Teach students the importance of civic involvement
• Expose students to Board of Education functions, preparing them for possible future civic service 

To qualify for the Student Board of Education Representative election, students must submit a Declaration of Candidacy form by the established deadline to the designated personnel. Qualified candidates shall:

1. Swear to their intent to fulfill the two-year commitment to the role (apprenticeship and representative)

2. Submit a "Parent/Guardian Acknowledgment of Student Board of Education Representative Candidacy" signed by the student's parent/guardian
3. Be in good academic standing with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
4. Exhibit acceptable behavior attested to by two teachers.
5. Submit a "Course of Study Plan for Student Board of Education Representative Candidates" signed by a school counselor.
