WE Builds Bridges
Westchester is an EL School which believes in the importance of learning Character Knowledge:
- Work to become effective learners: develop the mindsets and skills for success in college, career, and life (e.g., initiative, responsibility, perseverance, collaboration)
- Work to become ethical people: treat others well and stand up for what is right (e.g., empathy, integrity, respect, compassion)
- Contribute to a better world: put their learning to use to improve communities (e.g., citizenship, service)
What does it feel like to belong at Westchester? How can I be a bridge to belonging at Westchester? These are some questions that the students and staff will be exploring this year. We want to invite our parents to be a part of this ongoing learning that can open up conversations about the impact that our thoughts and actions have on others.
The teachers started building knowledge about the bridges and connections that come from building bridges. Our focus for this learning will be a schoolwide expedition, “Building Bridges to Belonging.” During daily crew meetings, students and teachers will focus on stories that share how bridges make connections between places and people. Once there is that connection, there is an opportunity to know and understand others differently. In the coming weeks the students will also learn about Ruby Bridges and the impact that a young girl can have on others around her.
